DINO MENEGHIN

The Italian basketball legend was born in Alano di Piave on 18th January 1950. His unique career lasted no less than 28 seasons and was studded with fantastic success stories. 12 Championships, 7 Champions Cups, 3 Intercontinental Cups, 2 Cup Winners' Cups, 1 Korac Cup, 7 Italy Cups, 271 games played in the national team, competing in 4 Olympic games events, winning a Silver Medal in Moscow in 1980, 8 European Championships (2 Bronze Medals and 1 Gold Medal in ‘83 in Nantes) and 2 World Championships.

However, the figures do not fully describe the character, determination, and the personality of the man who has been an Italian basketball winner the greatest number of times, rendering almost unbeatable all the teams in which he played. His basketball career was divided almost equally between Varese, where he played 10 consecutive Champions' Cup Finals and Milan, where he played no less than 8 consecutive Final Championships.

He moved to Trieste in 1990 at the age of 40 where he remained for 3 seasons. One of the most exciting moments in Meneghin's career occurred precisely when playing in the ranks of the Trieste team: father and son, Dino and Andrea Meneghin, faced each other as rivals, on 14th October 1990 the latter was playing in his first season with Cagiva Varese. Meneghin changed to a desk job in 1994, after playing the last year of basketball wearing the Milan shirt and in 1996 he won the combined championship - Italy cup, this time as the Team Manager.

In 1997 he was the vice-champion as the Italian National Team Manager at the European Championships in Barcelona and was appointed as the Ambassador of Italian Sport by Walter Veltroni, Minister for Sport in the same year. Meneghin was the European champion in Paris in 1999 as the Italian National Team Manager. In 2000 he took part as the Team Director in the away trip by the Italian National Team at the Olympic Games event held in Sidney. Meneghin was appointed by F.I.BA. as European President of the Athletes Commission in the same year. He was elected as a member of Coni (Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano - Italian National Olympic Committee) in 2001 to represent the athletes. In 2003 Meneghin was elected to the world basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield (USA).

His career and his commitments associated with the world of sport do not stop here. Dino Meneghin has also personally created and promoted the "City Camps" formula, the national 3 vs. 3 Basket 3 inter-school tournament, a championship event with a winning formula involving the ESCA prize, Basket Fun and the multi-sport camp organised at the Idropark Fila venue. In addition, his civil commitment, working with numerous no-profit voluntary associations as a testimonial, confirms the human qualities which in the world of sport have already indicated him as pre-eminently the number-one sportsman.

Dino Meneghin won the Silver Medal in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games as the Italian National Basketball Team Manager.

He is now President of the Italian Basketball Federation.
