RULES

1. Four categories are foreseen: Junior Secondary School, with male and female teams, and Senior Secondary School, with male and female teams.

2. Each team is formed of four male/female players (3 on the court plus a substitute) and will be required to wear the playing kit supplied by the Organisation.

3. The game, refereed by the teacher or by assistants indicated by the contact person (referred to as controllers), is played with a single basket and only in one half of the court, so that two games can be played simultaneously (with regulation-sized baskets and balls).

4. The game does not foresee referees. The controllers will keep the score and the time of the match, intervening only in the case of a dispute.

5. The initial possession of the ball is determined by tossing a coin, the attacking action must start from behind the three-points line (a conventional reference point will be established in the absence of the three-points line).

6. Possession of the ball changes every time a basket is scored. A free-throw wins 1 point.

7. The game starts again from behind the three points line when possession of the ball changes (defence rebound, intercept).

8. The ball must be touched by at least 2 players in attack, before each conclusion with the ball in the basket, to allow the defence to line up in position. Any basket shot will be annulled if this rule is broken, and in this case possession of the ball will pass to the team in defence.

9. The ball must be touched by a player of the team playing in defence before the game can restart (after a basket has been shot or after an infringement).

10. The game is won by the first team that reaches 21 points or by the team that is leading after 10' of play.

11. If the game ends in a draw after 10' of play, the three players of each team who are on court at that moment will take one free throw each. The match will be won by the team that shoots the highest number of baskets. The free throws will be continued with one player selected from each team, in the case of a draw (just like football penalties).

12. There is no limit to the number of changes during a match. Substitutions can only be made after a basket has been shot or during a pause in the game. The 3" and 24" rules have been abolished.

13. A foul can only be called by the player that sustains the foul.

14. The game starts again behind the conventional line after each foul, also while shooting a basket.

15. An additional free throw is to be taken in the case a basket is shot and a foul is sustained, and is to be followed by possession of the ball by the team that committed the foul.

16. The male/female player that sustains a foul always has a free throw available and the team always keeps possession of the ball, starting from the 7th foul inclusive, committed by a team.

17. Two free throws and possession of the ball are assigned to the opposing team in the case of an anti-sporting foul or a technical foul. A player committing two deliberate fouls in the same match will be sent off.

18. Each team can use 1 time out of 30" per match.

19. If a team refuses voluntarily to go on court the controller will penalise the team by imposing a technical foul after giving a first verbal warning.

20. In the case of a draw, the team that passes to the next heat in tournaments which adopt an Italian style round formula, will be decided based on the following criteria: 1) the number of direct matches played; 2) the quotient of baskets shot during the direct matches played; 3) the quotient of baskets shot in all the matches played; 4) the highest number of baskets shot; 5) the youngest age.

The F.I.P. (‘Federazione Italiana Pallacanestro' - Italian Basketball Federation) technical rules are applicable for all aspects not specified.
